Transcription notes

LOWER EVIDENCE TIER. Condition note verbatim: 'A very good, well-inked and crisp impression with strong contrasts and touches of burr on the beard, right eye and below the brim of the hat.' Sheet described as 'narrow to thread margins'. Valuable mainly because it records the Biorklund and Usticke state systems (both 3 states) and names the 'Jean rework' as the later intervention.

How to read this record

Every field above is transcribed from the holding institution’s own published record, in the institution’s own words. Nothing has been normalised, converted or reconciled — where a record is internally inconsistent, or disagrees with another institution, the inconsistency is preserved, because it is data about the state of cataloguing for this plate rather than noise to be tidied away.

If this record is wrong — and if you work at this institution you will know before we do — please tell us. Corrections are logged with their reason and credited.
